Is your home network as safe as it could be?

December 27th, 2009

The same idea applies to computers. Your computer is on the same “Street” ( the Internet ) as the hacker.  Your computer communicates with the rest of the computers on the internet by sending information through “ports”.  Everyday, computers across the globe send out billions of requests that are called “pings”. sent from the computer of a hacker looking for an unsuspecting victim.  If the hacker knows your computer is online, you are at risk. Routers usually have hardware firewalls built into them. If your computer is the only computer connected to the internet in your home or office, there is a good chance you are not “invisible”.

If you are behind a firewall, it wont really know your computer is there.  If you are not behind a firewall, it will tell you the number of the port it found your computer on.

If you need help, enlist the help of a reputable computer repair shop picking a router out and/or help installing it.

Success In Network Marketing Starts With the Person in the Mirror

December 26th, 2009

Network marketing is the same as any other business — to succeed you need a system, and more importantly you need to follow it!

There are many different techniques that successful network marketers have used, and it is tempting to look at another system, think that’s far easier, and try to change what you are already doing. A big mistake! Find a system that works and don’t let yourself be distracted. When your income is secure then perhaps you can experiment, but even then it could slow your progress.

Information about your product and recommended promotional techniques can be discussed, but the most important benefit of these real life, or virtual, meetings is that they help to keep your attitude about your life and business positive.

A good network marketing company will supply you with a list of recommended books. Some even go so far as to say, “I will not work with you unless you read X, Y, and Z”. A good diet of positive and motivational books will build your belief in yourself and your business, and can serve as an alternative or an add-on to your meetings.

Success for a network marketer starts in the mind. More than any other business you need to have a positive attitude. Remember this key point if nothing else. Believe that you will build a business and you are on your way. If you have doubts they will slowly sabotage your success, and this can be amplified if the only people you associate with don’t understand what you are doing.

This is the reason that traditional networking companies have opportunity meetings and sizzle sessions. So that you associate with like minded individuals who are positive and goal-oriented, and so that their knowledge and belief rubs off on you. If your company is internet based you will find that they have conference calls, forums and chatrooms to keep people motivated and focused.

Your own mind is the biggest barrier to success in network marketing, and the influence you allow others to have over it. The development of a great communication system with people in your upline and your team is the key to any networking system. You can distribute flyers, business cards and put up notices, but if you don’t connect with other people in your business, and maintain a positive attitude your networking business will stagnate.

But if you work hard at improving your attitude, and use the above tools to dispel any doubts you may have you will find that your network marketing business will grow by leaps and bounds. As they say, “it’s all in the mind”!

Voice-Data Network Solution – What To Consider Besides Bandwidth And Cost

December 25th, 2009

When you are deciding on a voice/data network solution for your business the obvious factors to take into consideration are bandwidth and cost. However if you base your entire solution on those factors alone you risk facing issues you could have easily prevented with just a bit more strategic thought and planning.

The article “Why Do Businesses Prefer T1 And T3 Bandwidth Connections” is a good attempt at addressing the business issues involved with the decision making process for a small or medium business with limited telecommunications / network connectivity needs.

But that is just a start.

For businesses, with more than rudimentary network connectivity needs, there really is much much more involved in driving these kinds of decisions. Also, there are several more technology options beyond T1/T3 (aka DS1/DS3) and xDSL. It’s also important to understand that Bandwidth and cost, while important, are rarely the only drivers of solutions in this space.

The driver for solutions here is business problems.

What does your business need?

High volume public and/or private network throughput? Robust Availability with Substantial SLA (Service Level Agreement) guarantees? International reach? Flexibility? Cost Effectiveness? Consistent product/feature availability within a given geographic region? etc.

If a business’ telecommunications needs are:

5 or less locations with Email, Web surfing and ~20 phones lines or less….than xDSL, Cable or a Mixed Services (integrated) Local DS1 are all on the table as options.

For larger businesses that may have a need for private connectivity between branch locations, to maintain a call center, host internet or external partner facing servers, or in anyway depend on network connectivity as part of their revenue stream…… xDSL or Cable are rarely options.

Businesses in this category need the reliability and “known quantity” of telco services, that tend to leverage DS1, DS3, OC3/12 etc as local access, as a component of availability of their larger solution. Additionally Metro Optical and Ethernet solutions, where available, are increasingly more cost effective and flexible alternatives to copper and SONET based local access services.

The bottom line when working through a decision on a voice/data network for your business is to look beyond just bandwidth and cost. You must also consider the requirements and impact for your existing AND future applications, infrastructure, volume, network stability, security/privacy, partner/customer interface, and supplier connectivity. Ensuring all these factors are considered will ensure your solution addresses all possible business requirements……. and prevents the potential for embarrasing or frustrating issues in the future.
